To smooth the floor i covered screw heads and seams in the cement fiber board with thinset.
Then spread thinset mortar with the flat side of a 1 4 in.
For best results remove existing floor covering especially if it is in poor condition again reading the installation.
If the subflooring is thin and lacks stiffness one remedy is to install a layer of new plywood subfloor over the resilient flooring followed by a layer of thin cement board.

If thickness is an issue however 1 4 inch thick backer board can be safely installed.
Tape the seams lay cement board fiberglass mesh tape over all the seams it s sticky on one side.
Apply adhesive to floor.
If you lay vinyl over it the vinyl will conform to all the imperfections in the cement board and your vinyl flooring will appear dimpled not smooth.
Cement board screws spaced every 4 in.
The floor is now smooth.
Embed the cement board and screw it to the underlayment with special 1 1 4 in.
Lay the cement backer board on the floor while the thin set is still wet.
I have since decided to install vinyl sheet flooring.
I do not see the ill effects with installing cbu over sheet vinyl except is is going to take days for the thinset under the cbu to dehydrate.
Here is my concern.
If removing the vinyl or linoleum before tiling appears to be an easy task it may be better to do this rather than tiling over it.
Use a notched trowel to apply thin set adhesive to the vinyl flooring.
