Lay the cement backer board on the floor while the thin set is still wet. I have since decided to install vinyl sheet flooring. I do not see the ill effects with installing cbu over sheet vinyl except is is going to take days for the thinset under the cbu to dehydrate. Here is my concern.

If removing the vinyl or linoleum before tiling appears to be an easy task it may be better to do this rather than tiling over it. Use a notched trowel to apply thin set adhesive to the vinyl flooring.
